Law School Lecturer joins international marine conference

Published: 14 May 2018

In early May, Research Fellow Robert Veal joined a panel for the 22nd Biennial Marine Seminar, hosted by the Board of Marine Underwriters of San Francisco, an affiliate of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters

Robert joined a session to speak on Unmanned and autonomous shipping: designs, operations and regulations, and appeared alongside a master mariner, an autonomous technology developer and a cyber expert.

Robert’s presentation focused on the compliance issues unmanned ships face under the existing framework of regulations and also how standard marine insurance contracts may need to be amended to reflect the new practicalities and product liability consequences of unmanned operations.

The audience (300+) was pooled from all over the US and Europe and comprised predominantly insurance professionals (marine brokers and underwriters), maritime lawyers and other professionals.  Conference attendees were awarded with the US equivalent of CPD education points.
