Student undertakes work experience at prestigious Quadrant chambers following outstanding LLM performance
Antonis Vakondios won the award for best performance in the taught aspect for the LLM in Maritime Law in 2018, and part of his prize was to spend a week at commercial Law specialists, Quandrant Chambers, based in London.
“Maritime Law drew my attention because it combines legal theory and practice in a unique way and satisfied my thirst for both academic research and a career in practice.
The academic environment at Southampton was the perfect setting for me to satisfy my goals, teaching staff triggered my interest for a deeper understanding of Maritime Law and helped me develop a wider perspective of the industry. The most astonishing aspect, however, was the enthusiasm of the academic team, which was present throughout the year of my studies. I believe that when the professors and lecturers are fascinated by their field of expertise, you can only draw inspiration and encouragement to pursue your passion.
During my time at Quadrant Chambers, I met with leading practitioners, gained an insight of the commercial shipping practice and attended a trial. It was an amazing experience, since it was an opportunity to see for myself the application of the subjects I had studied. The highlight of my time there was undoubtedly the fact that I met with leading practitioners and realised that through hard work and dedication a student can achieve his/her goals, even though they may seem impossible.
In Chambers, I undertook legal research in relation to open cases and addressed legal arguments in support of these cases. In a nutshell, I familiarised myself with the approach that barristers follow regarding a case. The experience has helped me to better understand the nature of the shipping practice and its correlation with maritime law. The tools I have been equipped with will support me in my career in this sector. After graduation, my plan is to gain further experience in the shipping practice in order to form a basis for my future career. My studies at the University of Southampton have met my expectations and I am sure that the knowledge I acquired will help me excel as a professional.”
