University of Southampton welcomes Honourable the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Mr. Dipak Misra
In September the University was delighted to welcome the Honourable Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Mr. Dipak Misra. Mr Misra delivered a talk entitled: Emerging Jurisprudence of Constitutional Ethos and Constitutional Morality.
In September Justice Misra announced a landmark ruling by Supreme Court of India to decriminalise homosexuality in the country, ending a law that dated back to the colonial era. This event is organised as part of the Southampton-India Distinguished Lecture Series, and hosted by the Southampton Law School under the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The talks address a range of challenging topics within the broader areas of human wellbeing and sustainable development in India and their implications both in the region and around the world.
Dr Alun Gibbs, Associate Professor in Public Law and Director of the Centre for Law, Policy and Society, attended the talk and said "Justice Misra has provided a rich and compelling account of the development and importance of the idea of constitutional morality in India. His lecture has underscored that, even in mature and well established constitutional democracies, there is an ongoing task to remain engaged with the way that human dignity is safeguarded by the state. This not only falls to important institutions and individuals but is also accomplished by the courage of individuals, often marginalised and persecuted, who make claims about the requirements of constitutional morality."
Southampton Law School regularly hosts talks and lectures from distinguished representatives within the legal sector, this has recently included Lord Neuberger, Former President of the UK Supreme Court.
