Top firms join Applications and Interviews Masterclass for top performing students

In September the Law School welcomed 25 top performing second year students to an ‘Applications and Interviews Masterclass’.

This new event was a unique opportunity for high achieving students to receive personal advice and guidance on applications and interview techniques from lawyers and recruiters from top global and regional law firms and barristers’ chambers.

The students were welcomed to the event by Professor David Gurnham and were joined by Director of Education, Dr Mark Telford and Dr Harry Annison, Year 2 Co-ordinator.

The panel members all from the legal profession included:

Derek Marshall (Head of College Chambers, Southampton), Jillian Dent (Graduate Recruitment Advisor, Linklaters), Claire Merritt, (Associate (Employment), Paris Smith), Rebecca Rees (Partner (Projects and Construction), Trowers and Hamlin).

They each spoke for 10 minutes sharing their top tips and advice on successful applications and interviews and then joined the students to work in small groups offering individual feedback.

Student Natalia Jopling Tanser said “The event was well worth travelling from home in Portugal in order to attend! It helped massively with the preparation I am doing for upcoming applications to firms, and it has changed my mind on where I am applying.

I am very much looking forward to the forthcoming academic year and look forward to putting my knowledge from the masterclass to good use”.
