NEW project - Improving understanding of the technical, policy, economic and cultural landscape of vessel loss due to solid bulk cargo liquefaction

Published: 12 November 2018

An inter-disciplinary research project led by Professor Susan Gourvenec (Engineering), with Professor Emily Reid (Law) is one of 10 which have recently been successful in applying for funding from the University’s Southampton Marine and Maritime Innovation (SMMI) Collaboration Stimulus Fund.

The fund is supported by the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) and allocated to the University by HEFCE. It is expected that work undertaken with the support of the grants will lead to external funding applications or contract proposals in collaboration with industry.  Solid bulk cargo liquefaction is a significant issue for the shipping industry, and poses a combination of technological and regulatory challenges which invite an inter-disciplinary approach which the University, and SMMI are strongly positioned to develop. The work to be undertaken within this project will engage a range of stakeholders from across the sector.
