Professor Sophie Stalla-Bourdillon wins two research grants

Professor Sophie Stalla-Bourdillon has won an EPSRC grant together with Professor Luc Moreau (King’s College London) to explore explanations generated for automated decisions.

The research project PLEAD will start in September 2019 and will bring together an interdisciplinary team of technologists, legal experts, commercial companies and public organisations to investigate how provenance can help explain the logic that underlies automated decision-making to the benefit of data subjects as well as help data controllers to demonstrate compliance with the law. Plead will bring £253,457 to Southampton Law School over a period of 2 years. There is a research fellow post for this now advertised on the University Jobs page.

Sophie has also, together with Professor S. Staab and Associate Professor Tiropanis NoBias, won an innovative training network grant, which will train a cohort of 15 ESRs (Early-Stage Researchers) to address problems with bias through multi-disciplinary training and research in computer science, data science, machine learning, law and social science. The network is EU funded through the Horizon2020 scheme. The total amount of the grant for Southampton Uni is £909,517.68 over a period of 4 years.
