LLB Students Win 2022 Cross Moot Competition
Out of 60 teams and 300 students representing institutions from around the globe, Aleks Sekulic, Michael Rozek and Syeda Noshin Jannat have won the Cross Moot competition.
The Cross Moot competition is an international arbitration moot with an exclusive focus on witness handling. This year’s case was complex and multi-faceted, exploring the intersections between energy-intensive cryptocurrency mining industry, policies aimed at achieving net-zero emissions, and the fluctuating cryptocurrency markets in the context of an M&A transaction, as well as corruption allegations.
Michael, Aleks and Noshin beat Kings College London in the final, after beating the University of Oxford in the quarter-finals, and the National Law School of India in the semi-finals.
Reflecting on the experience, Michael said “we gained a new perspective of the real-world of commercial arbitration. This is not something often touched upon in-class, but was interesting to see in real-life, and to receive feedback from global practitioners.” Noshin added further, “being able to apply the various legal skills I've gained throughout my time at Southampton Law School was very exciting.”
In addition, Aleks was awarded the prize for Best Individual Performance in Expert Cross Examination. The prize will involve undertaking an internship with Compass Lexicon in summer 2023. Aleks commented, “I’m proud to be honoured by this award which has given me more motivation to continue developing as an advocate.”
The team added how grateful they were “for being able to participate in the competition” and “grateful that the education experience at Southampton Law School has led to this point” which they hope will inspire current and future students to similarly participate in future mooting competitions.
