On 27 February 2023, Southampton Law School hosted a workshop exploring the legal and philosophical dimensions of the relationships between health and social rights. The event was co-hosted by the Centre de recherche en éthique at the Université de Montréal and co-organized by Michael Da Silva (Lecturer in Law) and Ryoa Chung (Associate Professor in Philosophy, Université de Montréal).

As part of this event, Da Silva provided an overview of key claims in his book, The Pluralist Right to Health Care: A Framework and Case Study (University of Toronto Press, 2021) and chaired all the philosophical and legal discussions. The workshop also featured a presentation by Southampton Law School’s Elena Prybitkova (Lecturer in Law) on corporate responsibility for fulfilling socio-economic rights.

The workshop also featured presentations given by academic colleagues from UK institutions including Jeff King (UCL), Sridhar Venkatapuram (KCL), Jonathan Wolff (Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford), as well as international colleagues including Dr. Chung, Nicole Hassoun (Binghamton University), Éliot Litalien (Montréal), and Daniel Weinstock (McGill University).

Commenting on the workshop, Michael Da Silva said “This event was a great reminder of how fruitful interactions between philosophers and legal scholars can be, especially when dealing with value-laden issues. I am grateful for the School of Law’s investment in socio-economic rights scholarship and this event. I hope this was only the first of many collaborations between this excellent groups of scholars.”
