The Hon. Mr Justice Eder , A Justice of the High Court of England and Wales. Sir Bernard Eder studied law at Downing College, Cambridge (1971-1974) where he obtained a double-first. He became a member of Inner Temple in 1975 and, following pupillage, joined chambers in 1976 at 4 Essex Court, Temple. He practised for almost 35 years as a barrister at 4 Essex Court and thereafter Essex Court Chambers specialising in commercial law including shipping, insurance/reinsurance, banking, commodities and energy law. He took silk ie became Queen's Counsel in 1991. During his life at the English Bar, he acted as Counsel in over 100 reported cases (including in the Commercial Court, the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords) and over 200 international arbitrations. He also acted as Counsel in numerous foreign jurisdictions (including Singapore, Gibraltar and various Courts in the Caribbean) as well as arbitrator under the aegis of the ICC, the LCIA and the LMAA. He was Visiting Professor at University College, London (1999-2003) where he taught shipping law as part of the LLM course. He is currently the Senior Editor of Scrutton on Charterparties and Bills of Lading. In 2011, he was appointed a Justice of the High Court of England and Wales (Queen's Bench Division) and granted a Knighthood. He is assigned to sit in the Commercial Court.
