Artur Parkhomenko LLM Maritime Law, 2016

I chose the University of Southampton because of its stellar academic and professional reputation in the field, but I soon realised that the Law School offers so much more than that.
Having grown up in Cyprus, I inevitably developed a keen interest towards shipping. Following my completion of an LLB, I felt that it was necessary to extend the breadth of my knowledge of maritime law. I was interested in the practical aspects of the market in order to place the legal principles I had learned in the context of the industry itself.
Of course, given the prestigious nature of the programme I could take solace in the fact that, regardless of what modules I chose to study, I would be in the hands of prominent scholars and practitioners. This fact, coupled with the university’s considerable research resources and accessibility of feedback from professors, created a learning environment which would allow anyone to thrive.
What set the University of Southampton apart from the rest, was the School’s focus on offering students a well-rounded experience – there were numerous social events where it was possible to engage with your peers and employers. Be it sports, meeting like-minded people or initiating your career, the Law School offers ample opportunity to expand your horizons, as long as you’re willing to take the prerequisite leap.
