I chose Southampton Law School because not only is the Law School a world leader in the maritime law field, it is also a highly rated University for research work. I completed my LLM in Maritime in Law in Southampton and before I joined Southampton, I completed my LLB in Hertfordshire.

I chose Southampton Law School because not only is the Law School a world leader in the maritime law field, it is also a highly rated University for research work.

My study experience has been great! Not only do you have access to the best legal minds, every single one of them is approachable and willing to help in any way. Although it always is the case that your research is unique, from speaking to colleagues about their own research, you learn one or two things that are relevant to your research, and people are always willing to share links to articles or commentary they come across that could be useful for your research. And it’s always nice catching up wth colleagues outside of uni. The work has stretched and challenged me, because sometimes it’s easy to underestimate how much time and effort research takes, especially independent research.

What interests and excites me most about my study is the potential to break new ground, as the whole point of a PhD is contributing something new to the existing literature, which can be daunting, but it’s as close as one gets to a blank canvas, and hopefully at the end of it, you’ve created a beautiful picture that’s useful and relevant for years to come.

Southampton is a lovely and vibrant place to live in, and I love that you can literally find things to do on your doorstep. Lots of nice bars and restaurants, and if that’s not enough, London is only a short train ride away!

Next, I plan to further my legal career; qualify as a Solicitor and broaden my knowledge about the practical aspect of maritime law. And hopefully one day, return to Southampton as an academic- who knows!
