Hi, I'm Ravi Jawani and I studied Maritime Law within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.

I always wanted to come here and I’m having a marvellous time meeting new people and really getting to grips with the law

I am from Mumbai (formerly Bombay) and knew the University of Southampton was the best place to study maritime law. I was delighted when my exam grades proved good enough to book my flight to Heathrow.

I always wanted to come here and I’m having a marvellous time meeting new people and really getting to grips with the law. My academic career started with a first degree in commerce in Poona before undertaking another Bachelors Degree in Law and a Diploma in Shipping Management in Mumbai.

I always knew I wanted to specialise in maritime law so I could work in the family shipping business. I feel my subject is taught in a clearer and more thorough way at Southampton. I’ve explored common law already and I feel I have a much better understanding of it and realise its importance.

However, some aspects of University life have come as a surprise. In India, hostels for students are all single-sex, here they are mixed. I’m sharing a flat with seven other students from England, China, Greece and Ghana and I’m making a lot of friends.

Besides law, cookery is also an important subject to me. My family is convinced I’m dying of hunger because I had no idea how to cook when I left India. But, I’m learning and I can now manage to make a curry. I have also snapped up a part-time job in the Students’ Union café.

Southampton is a beautiful place, it’s quiet and the people are so friendly.
