Careers and Employability Skills Lecture Programmes

Careers Programme
Careers Programme

The Law School offers students two separate programmes to enhance their employability skills and improve their job prospects.

The Employability Skills Lecture Programme offers students a series of timetabled lectures which cover the key skills which employers expect law students to have developed and be able to demonstrate. Sessions are also delivered which provide students with the essential skills to successfully apply for vacation schemes, mini-pupillages, work experience and graduate jobs.

The Careers Programme is a week long programme which takes place in November and is targeted at Year 2 students for whom the Programme is a compulsory part of their studies. Students from other years are also invited to attend any sessions in which they are interested. Around 25 different sessions are offered to improve students’ understanding of the wide range of careers open to them in the legal and non-legal sectors. Examples include: ‘Working as a Lawyer in Government’, ‘A Graduate Career in the Prison Service’, ‘Working as a barrister and solicitor in Family Law’ and ‘Non-Legal Careers in the Civil Service'.

These Programmes offer students excellent opportunities to network and make important contacts in the legal and business communities.

What employers think

'It was so inspiring (and refreshing!) meeting so many of the students - and new Law School staff - and hearing what they're involved in. The Law School continues to impress me with its progress and evolving nature' - Colin Colas, Civil Service Fast Stream.

'I really enjoyed the session. The attendees seemed engaged and contributed and asked questions throughout the session which was great' - Andrew Crudge, Associate, Irwin Mitchell.

'I really enjoyed the visit and the students seems engaged and asked good questions. I have also already been contacted by some of the students which is nice. I think the Programme is an excellent idea and there certainly seemed a better turn out for the sessions than when I have attended before in January' - Stephanie Eaton, Associate, Signature Litigation LLP.

'You have assembled an impressive variety of speakers from a range of roles and backgrounds. As a result the students should have a much clearer idea of what each career option entails and thereby be more enabled to make informed choices' - Tony Williams, Jomati Consultants LLP.

'You should be proud of what you are doing in the Faculty. The students are first rate, and I think the Programme you have organised is invaluable' - Alan Corcoran, Partner, Shoosmiths.

What students think

The week was very well planned and very informative.

The quality and range of speakers and sessions was excellent as there was something for everyone.

I am now continuing my degree with a much broader outlook on what options I have.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Well organised and very motivating to see who our alumni are and how successful they are.
