Researchers at the forefront of imaging technologies will be converging on the University of Southampton to take part in a symposium exploring how cutting-edge developments in this field could transform the future of healthcare.

The Southampton Bioimaging Symposium, is being held co-hosted by the Institute for Life Sciences (IfLS) and the Biomedical Imaging Unit, and will bring users and developers of optical imaging together to show how technologies have enabled biological breakthroughs in recent years.

Entitled Technology Driven Biology, the free event is being held at the Institute for Developmental Sciences at University Hospital Southampton, later this month, and will provide opportunities for researchers from universities across the UK to present their latest achievements using the latest technologies for biological research.

Symposium chair Professor Sumeet Mahajan, from the IfLS and a Professor of Molecular Biophotonics and Imaging at the University, said: “The symposium will highlight the transformation in understanding that is being brought out by novel light microscopy and imaging technologies.”

Co-organiser Dr Dave Johnston, of the Biomedical Imaging Unit, added: “Technology is one of the major factors that is transforming medicine and biomedical sciences. By bringing together experts from all areas of this important field, we hope to demonstrate the potential of new technologies and how they can be used to push the frontiers of healthcare.”

During the day, key speeches will span the fields of:

  • developmental biology
  • regenerative medicine
  • neurosciences
  • cancer biology and immunology
  • disease models such as spheroids and organoids

Techniques covered will include:

  • 4D imaging
  • super-resolution imaging
  • intravital imaging
  • lightsheet microscopy
  • multiphoton microscopy
  • adaptive optics
  • tip enhanced Raman spectroscopy
  • machine learning

Early career researchers (ECR) and students at the University will also present their work to the delegates. Sumeet said: “At Southampton, we aim to develop the next generation of researchers. This symposium will give our students and ECRs the opportunity to learn about what is happening around the UK in terms of imaging research and development, as well as showcase their own emerging research.”

The University of Southampton has a strong reputation for its pioneering interdisciplinary research in different areas of imaging technologies. The IfLS has been a fundamental catalyst in bringing together academics from a diverse range of subject areas across Life Sciences at Southampton who are pushing the boundaries of developments in these technologies. These include:

Cancer Immunology Centre

Biomedical Imaging Unit

Molecular Biophotonics and Imaging

Super-resolution optical imaging

The WISH Lab

Digital Pathology

The Ober Laboratory

Speakers at the event include:

Professor Mark Bradley - University of Edinburgh
Dr Lin Wang - Central Laser Facility, Science and Technology Facilities Council
Dr Audrey Gerard - Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, University of Oxford
Dr Amanda Wright - Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham
Dr Raphael Levy – Institute of Integrative Biology, University of Liverpool
