On Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th July 40 students, aged 14-16, from 25 different schools across the South joined us for the annual Lifelab Medics Summer School.

The Medics Summer School provides students who are interested in studying medicine with a hands on, interactive experience of what it is like to train and work as a doctor. The students took part in anatomy and pathology teaching sessions and learnt how to perform clinical skills such as suturing and cannulation. These sessions were all led by current medical students at Southampton University so the students got plenty of opportunity to ask questions and find out what it's like to study medicine here.

The students also got to watch a trauma team respond to an emergency scenario, hear from the keynote speaker about life in medicine and visit some of the clinical areas to see health professionals at work. The 2 days culminated with sessions on interviews skills and how the application process works.

The Summer School was once again a huge success and these are just some of the comments received afterward:

'Well organised with lots of exciting things to do. Great experience. Given me a good insight into working in medicine. Being able to ask the med students questions was really helpful.' 2017 student

'It was very informative and I liked how we learnt real clinical skills.' 2017 student

'Appreciate the opportunity to better understand the possible opportunities in the medical field.' 2017 parent
