Youth Health Champions recieving their certificates

On Wednesday 19th July LifeLab hosted the annual showcase. It was held in the Heartbeat Education Centre and attended by participating pupils, parents, teachers, scientists and Southampton University and University Hospital Southampton VIP's.

Professor Marcus Grace, Head of the Southampton University School of Education, ran the evening which saw presentations from Kath Woods-Townsend, the LifeLab Programme Manager, outlining where LifeLab is at with its current research and Hannah Davey, the Early LifeLab Co-ordinator, detailing the plans for the Early LifeLab Primary school modules and potential research developments.

Guests also heard from the teachers and students from Sandown Bay Academy who have been involved in the LifeLab project, talk about their experiences with the programme and how it has benefited students' learning and enthusiasm for Science. The New LifeLab Ambassadors were welcomed by Donna Lovelock, one of the LifeLab teachers, and Holly Leat and Dr Paul Roberts, both science teachers from St Anne's Catholic School, talked about how their students have engaged with the LifeLab project in different ways and how they have been able to use LifeLab as a way to engage parents with their children's learning.

As part of the Showcase the new Youth Health Champions from Redbridge Community School, Cantell School and St George's Catholic College were presented with their certificates by Christine McGrath, the Director of Research for UHS NHS Foundation Trust. The Youth Health Champions is a level 2 certificate awarded by the Royal Society of Public Health. It enables young people to develop knowledge, leadership skills and confidence to take on the role of a YHC and then engage their peers, increase awareness of healthy lifestyles and deliver health campaigns within their school. It was run by the Solent NHS Trust with support from the School Nursing team and is now being delivered by LifeLab in partnership with Southampton City Council and No Limits. Ravita Taheem, from Southampton City Council, talked about how the award can benefit young people and the opportunities for more Southampton Schools to take part through LifeLab.

During the break there was an opportunity for the guests to look at the posters on display that the students have completed as part of their Scientific Health Investigation and vote for the best ones, whilst enjoying the refreshments.

There were 3 categories for poster awards:

The Most Scientific Poster, which was won by Emily and Maddi from Applemore Technology College. The Best Scientific Question, which was won by Rhea, Gabrielle, Jahlecia, Leanne, Rhianna and Rajabi from St Anne's Catholic College. The Best Presented Poster which was won by Orchard Junior School. The certificates were presented by Marcus Grace.

The showcase was also an opportunity to thank the schools that have been a part of the randomised control trials funded by the Bupa Foundation and the British Heart Foundation which drew to a close this summer and to hear from Sofia Strommer about the exciting new EACh-B, Engaging Adolescents in Changing Behaviour, research that LifeLab is to be involved with.
