Anglo Saxons, Vikings and Normans

The module will introduce you to the Archaeology of early medieval England from the 5th to the 11 century CE.

Viking runes

This period was one of great social and cultural upheaval with the end of Roman Britain, the formation of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, the Viking incursions and, finally, the Norman Conquest. Drawing primarily upon the archaeological evidence, you will not only be able to consider all these changes but also the subsequent development of society and culture in England.

At all times you will be able to consider how developments in archaeological theory have influenced the interpretation of the evidence from this period. The module will draw to a close in 1066 with the Battle of Hastings and the end of Anglo-Saxon England.

Course date/time:

Wednesdays 7:30pm - 9:30pm, starting 1st February 2012
