Experiencing China

This course is suitable for those who wish develop an understanding of China. Key areas covered are China's geography, history, education, family, customs and tourism. The course is designed to provide up-to-date information about China and to encourage further interest in exploring Chinese culture.

The module will be delivered with the following syllabus, although flexibility is possible according to the interest of the class.

Land - China's geographical location, typography, climate, administrative division

People - China's population, ethnic groups, the Chinese family, the Single-child Policy, people's leisure life

History - major historical events since 1949: causes and consequences

Workshop 1- Chinese well-being - practicing Tai-chi

Education - Chinese educational traditions, the current system and pressing issues

Language - Mandarin Chinese and dialects, the sound and written systems of the Chinese language, calligraphy

Workshop 2: Chinese calligraphy - writing with a brush

Festivals - Chinese festivals: their rituals and associations

Tourism - The Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Terra-cotta Warriors, the five holy mountains

Workshop 3: Chinese cuisine and festive food - making dumplings and spring rolls
