Creative Writing Skills

This module will explore stimulating, interactive and innovative ways of producing competent writing, covering the genres of writing for stage and screen, poetry, short stories, children's fiction, life-writing, and novels.

Writing creatively
Writing creatively

Each of these six genres will be explored over two weeks, prompting an awareness of key skills and developing your own creative writing in these areas.  Through a study and discussion of prime examples of writing, each week you will be engaging with texts and discovering what does and does not work.

Each week we will be involved with a variety of creative writing exercises and activities designed to aid you in your writing. Importantly, you will be given the opportunity to read out your works-in-progress in a safe and constructive environment, providing critical yet encouraging feedback to group members.

This module is designed as an introduction to the wide ranging and exciting gamut of creative writing and is based on the premise that, whilst creative writing is subjective and what ‘works' is a matter of opinion, writing is a craft with key skills that need to be mastered in order to be successful.

Date: Wednesday evenings, starting 9 October 2013
Time: 7 - 9 pm
