English Literature
Creative Writing Skills

This module will explore stimulating, interactive and innovative ways of producing competent writing, covering the genres of writing for stage and screen, poetry, short stories, children's fiction, and novels.

Each of these five genres will be explored over two weeks, prompting an awareness of key skills and developing your own creative writing in these areas. Through a study and discussion of prime examples of writing, you will be engaging with texts and discovering what does and does not work.

Throughout the module, you will undertake a variety of creative writing exercises and activities designed to aid you in your writing. Importantly, you will be given the opportunity to read out your works-in-progress in a safe and constructive environment, providing critical yet encouraging feedback to group members.

This module is designed as an introduction to the wide ranging and exciting gamut of creative writing and is based on the premise that, whilst creative writing is subjective and what ‘works' is a matter of opinion, writing is a craft with key skills that need to be mastered in order to be successful.

The module will be split into five areas of Creative Writing, allowing for two weeks per area:

- Writing the Novel

- Short Stories

- Writing for Stage and Screen

- Poetry

- Writing for Children and Young Adults

Course start date: 11 January 2015
£160 (£155 for University Staff & Students)
