Shakespeare & Renaissance Drama

This course will examine a range of dramatic works from the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.

The course will include plays written by Shakespeare and his contemporaries for the public and private theatres, but will also consider examples of other performance types such as ceremonial and court entertainments. 

Each text will be examined within the context of contemporary events and we will explore how performance was used for a wider range of purposes than entertainment, including participation in political and religious issues.
