Scorsese and De Niro: Four Masterpieces

Martin Scorsese is arguably the leading American film director of his time with a distinguished career spanning over 40 years and including some 24 feature films. Like the best directors of his generation (the ‘Hollywood Renaissance’ of the 1970s), he combines in his work elements of American cinema and European art cinema, from which he took the idea of film as, at best, a form of personal expression.

This short course will involve a close analytical study of four of his major films made between 1973 and 1990 that may be seen as a group: featuring powerful performances by Robert De Niro playing unpredictable, alienated and dangerous characters; dealing in different ways with street life in New York, crime and violence and issues of masculinity, while revealing a preoccupation with such religious concepts as sin, damnation and redemption; and demonstrating an exceptionally dynamic and innovative use of the cinematic medium in a fusion of realism and expressionism.

The course will also consider the contexts in which the films were made and the contributions to them of key creative personnel, and ask how far it may be valid to see them as ‘personal’ works expressing the individual ‘vision’ of their director.

This course will also incorporate a Saturday study day on 6 June to look further in to this area.

Planned films will be shown on these dates: Mean Streets (1973) 27 April (Mon), Taxi Driver (1975) 11 May (Mon), Raging Bull (1981) 18 May (Mon), GoodFellas (1990) 2 June (Tues)
