It is very easy to take local history for granted: why things are the way they are, why is a house built like that, why should we care? We should care a great deal as history is incredibly significant, doubly so for local history. Local history is incredibly important, not only because the more we know the greater attachment we feel to a place, but also it bequeaths a certain fondness and understanding of how history and archaeology influence the present.
The history of Southampton is rich and deep, and worthy of great appreciation; for the majority it is not immediately evident, but scratch the surface and with a little bit of effort a whole new, will slowly begin to unravel. This course aims through discussion and exploration of the social, religious, military, economic, cultural and inventive histories of Southampton to increase your awareness of the history and significance of the City.
