The Palestine Mandate

This module will explore the wider socio-political commonalities of the Anglo-Jewish response to the Palestine Mandate between 1917 and 1948, both at the time and in historical memory.

The module will begin with an introductory week designed to introduce a comprehensive understanding, and discussion, of the key terminology and chronology; debate will centre on the different language used to describe events in Palestine up to the present day, and the impact of this upon a multi-layered Anglo-Jewish identity. The following week will focus on the impact and repercussions of the Balfour Declaration in 1917, in order to provide context and understanding for the remainder of the module.

The module will then adopt a case study approach based on key actions of the Irgun Zvai Leumi, Haganah, and Lehi from 1917 to 1948. Each case study will begin by situating the event within a broader Jewish and non-Jewish socio-political context. The Anglo-Jewish reaction to each case study will then be examined. Finally, the retrospective perspective of these events will be investigated.

At all times, the module will necessitate the comprehensive examination of the primary source material, such as Mass Observation Archive and press material. Significantly, the module will incorporate the critical application of secondary theoretical sources to knowledge gained from analysis of primary material.

This module is based on the hypothesis that the responses of the Anglo-Jewish community, both at the time and in retrospect, to events in Palestine during the Mandate can only be fully understood by placing them within a broader socio-political landscape, which allows the complexities and continuities of such reactions to be contrasted with those in wider British society.
