Modern Languages evening courses

We offer a wide range of evening classes to suit all abilities - from complete beginner to advanced conversationalist.

Our courses are designed to develop all found language skills - speaking, understanding, reading and writing - with an emphasis on speaking and understanding in the class sessions.

Courses take place in the evening from 7-9 pm and are taught over a period of 30 weeks, which is divided into 3 terms of 10 weeks each.

Term dates for 2018/19 are as follows:

Term 1 (Autumn):  starts week commenting 09/10/18 - ending week commencing 10/12/2018 (10 weeks).

Term 2 (Spring):    starts week commencing 14/01/19 - ending week commencing 18/03/2019 (10 weeks).

Term 3 (Summer): starts week commencing 29/04/19 - ending week commencing 01/07/2019 (10 weeks).


Most language classes take place at the University's Avenue Campus which has excellent language-learning facilities and extensive resources. Once you have enrolled on one of our Modern Language courses you will be able to use these facilities to develop your learning.


Choose your language and level: 

We offer a range of levels from Stage 1 (beginner) through to Stage 3 (upper-intermediate).  For the more advanced learner we also have our fortnightly Language Clubs which provide a more informal option than a taught class with a focus on discussion of a range of topics from arts, politics, food, current affairs, culture. Clubs run on a fortnightly basis from 7-9pm.

Taste a course:

Language courses are normally only available to book as a whole course (30 weeks) but we understand that if you are a beginner you may wish to try out the course for one term before deciding if this is the right option for you. For stage 1 courses, therefore, you have the option to book for Term 1 (part A) only and should you wish to continue with the course you will be given the option to book for the remaining terms once your course has begun.

Course viability and Cancellations:

Your course will only run if it receives a sufficient number of bookings. This will be confirmed closer to the start date of the course. If you course is cancelled due to insufficient booking numbers, you will receive a full refund. Please note that the booking/payment confirmation that you receive should not be taken as a guarantee that the course will run. This confirmation will be sent to you separately once it has been established that the course will go ahead.

A staff/student discount is available to University of Southampton students, staff members and alumni. It is also available to University Southampton Hospital staff.

If you select the staff or student price option, you must use an online store account that has been set up with your University email address and fill out your University staff or student ID number when prompted as part of the questionnaire data section.

Language stages

The following descriptions should help you choose the right level of evening course for you. All courses are marked with their name and stage, both on our website and on the Online Store.

A more detailed description of each of these stages can be found here.


Suitable for those with:



Stage 1(Beginner)

Little or no prior knowledge of the language.


3 x 10 weeks

Stage 2
(Lower Intermediate)

Some basic skills in the language such as the ability to use simple phrases on personal and familiar topics.

Completion of Stage 1 course/GCSE/ Equivalent learning*

3 x 10 weeks

Stage 3(Intermediate)

The ability to communicate on a wider range of personal and familiar topics and engage in short social exchanges and conversations.

Completion of Stage 2 course/ AS level/ Equivalent learning*

3 x 10 weeks

Stage 4(Advanced Skills)

The ability to understand the main points of standard speech in the language and to deal with most situations relating to everyday life in the target language culture.

Completion of Stage 3 course/ A level/ Equivalent learning*

3 x 10 weeks
