Reasons to be cheerful?

The German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer argued that anyone who truly saw the truth about the suffering and futility in human life would think it better never to have existed. Was this view merely the result of his own skewed personal outlook, or did he have good reasons for it? And do things like love, art, morality or religion offer us any comfort?
