What good is knowledge?

The present debate about the role of universities is in part a debate about the value of knowledge, a debate that dates back to Socrates. Why, he asked, do we value knowledge? Are we right to do so? If knowledge is valuable, is it because of the practical benefits it brings? Or might it be valuable for its own sake?
