Event details

This course looks at the representation of women on the screen from the 1930s onwards. The emphasis is on outwardly strong, independent characters who defy social conventions to achieve their goals, sometimes at a heavy price.

The course will address Hollywood stars such as Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe, held to epitomise particular forms of femininity, and genres such as film noir, melodrama, the musical, science fiction and the thriller. While the emphasis is on American productions, there are also key titles from Britain and France.

There will be a study day at the University on Saturday 5 November to broaden and deepen the debate. The programme will include a screening of The Scarlet Empress(1934) followed by a group discussion.
