Event details

The number of women filmmakers is still extremely small – less than 10% in most countries, with France a notable exception – yet (perhaps partly for this reason) the overall quality of their work has been striking. Women have tended to find most opportunities in independent and art cinema, often as writer-directors making distinctively ‘personal’ films – this year’s Cannes Film Festival, for example, showcased a number of outstanding examples.

This course provides an opportunity to explore films by some of the most interesting women filmmakers working today - three American, two British and two French - and at the same time to consider to what extent their gender is an important consideration. Claire Denis, as the director with the most substantial body of work, is represented by her two most recent films.

Planned Films:

  • The Kids Are All Right
  • The Savages
  • Winter's Bone
  • Unrelated
  • Red Road
