Event details

February 2012 is LGBT History month and will see the launch of an annual Southampton Stonewall Lecture dedicated to exploring themes of lesbian and gay history, as well as other events such as workshops and debates.

Events Programme:

LGBT Debate: Born This Way?

Tuesday 7th February 2012, 5.30pm - 7pm. The Observatory, Building 85.
Are sexual orientation and gender dysphoria biologically determined, or are they a choice? Professor Deborah Humphris and the UoS LGBT Network invite researchers from all disciplines, or indeed anyone with an interest in queer studies to attend (or take part in) this fascinating debate. You can watch a short YouTube video on this topic and view the event poster before coming along.

Wednesday 15th February 2012, 10am - 5pm. Room 1145, Avenue Campus.
In addition, February 2012 will witness another one-day LGBT History Workshop. The first workshop of this kind in February 2011 revolved around eight short talks given by historians from the university and we are planning an equally diverse programme for 2012. We warmly welcome all to attend this workshop, and you can download the programme for 2012 before coming along.

Southampton Stonewall Lecture

Thursday 1st March 2012, 6pm. Lecture Theatre B, Avenue Campus.
The inaugural Southampton Stonewall Lecture will be given by Angela Mason, the first Executive Director of the Stonewall charity, who will give a personal view on the last quarter century of developments in LGBT rights. This annual lecture has been devised specifically to explore the history of the gay/lesbian past but also to mirror the University's ongoing commitment to diversity and equality. This year the lecture will also form the conclusion of '2012 LGBT History Month', for which a range of activities are planned across the university.
