Event details

We will be holding a one-day cultural event in July 2012, consisting of a series of short talks led by experts from within the Southampton Confucius Institute at the University. This thought provoking and hands-on day will provide you with the opportunity to learn and engage in discussion with academics of international distinction, and introduce you to a variety of new ideas.

Sessions include:

The Chinese Family (Prof. Siyi Fu, Confucius Institute)

During this session you will explore family culture in China, it's past and present. You will be able to explore issues such as the One Child Policy, gender role and marriage in China, and to evaluate some popular traditions associated with the Chinese family.

Chinese Festivals & Customs (MS Yan Zhou, Senior Tutor, Confucius Institute)

This session introduces you to the major festivals and customs observed in China. You will have opportunities to appreciate the various festive rituals and activities in different areas of the country as well as to understand their associations in Chinese folk culture.

Chinese calligraphy (Prof. Siyi Fu and MS Yan Zhou)

This session introduces you to Chinese calligraphy as an Oriental art and an important component of Chinese culture. You will be able to acquire some basic knowledge of Chinese calligraphy; its history, its underlying assumptions, its major styles and essential writing techniques. There will also be a practical element where you will try your hand at writing Chinese characters using a calligraphy brush. Demonstration will be integrated with practice.

Tai-chi and Chinese Wellbeing (MS Yan Zhou)

In this very relaxing session, you will learn how to practice Tai-chi and gain an understanding of the benefits that Tai-chi may have for you.  You will also get some insight into the theories of traditional Chinese well-being.
