The Story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers - University of Southampton Voices

The Year of Jubilee tells the incredible story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. The first educational establishment for emancipated slaves in the USA was Fisk University, in Nashville, Tennessee. In order to raise funds to build the University a choir was formed. After tentative beginnings, it went on to tour the United States, eventually achieving huge acclaim and success. They then came to Britain, performing to Queen Victoria and PM Gladstone.

Rather amazingly, they came to Southampton on March 26th, 1874, performing at Hartley Hall, part of Hartley Institute, which later became The University of Southampton. This concert marks the 140th anniversary of this historic event.

The music is based on the spirituals that the Fisk Singers performed - some lesser known, but many of them have become absolute classics - Steal Away, Deep River, Go Down Moses, Swing Low Sweet Chariot - and many others.

Star soloists including:
EMILY DANKWORTH
MELANIE MARSHALL
CLEVELAND WATKISS

Flute, Piccolo, Saxes - Finn Peters
Piano - Bryan Postlethwaite
Bass - Bastian Terraz
Drums - Theodore Carrasco

With the redoubtable University of Southampton Voices, directed by the Harvey Brough, Turner Sims Professor of Music.
