Event details

Castles exert their political power as much through their visual presence in a landscape as through actual military might. But what happens when that presence is also gendered as feminine?

Strong-hold: Castle walls and female spaces in literature since medieval times

This study day is part of a series of events organised by the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Culture at the University of Southampton in collaboration with Southampton City Art Gallery’s impressive new exhibition ‘Capture the Castle’, and is exploring the strong hold that castles have always had on the imagination and in culture.  This study day will explore the castle as an expression of female space in literature since medieval times. It will include talks on Shakespeare and modern drama, as well as a tour of the exhibition led by the curators of the exhibition

The Study Day will be held in the lecture theatre at Southampton City Art Gallery.

The price of this study day is £28 (£26 concessions) which includes a tour of the exhibition and tea/coffee at the breaks.  Please note lunch is not provided.

Bookings can be made online via our Online Store or by telephoning the Southampton City Art Gallery on 023 8083 4536.
