Event details

This lecture is supported by School of Humanities, the Southampton Law School and Amnesty International.

This is the eighth annual Human Rights Lecture and this year our speaker is Professor Christine Chinkin , Emeritus Professor International Law, The London School of Economics and Political Science.

Using human rights law to combat violence against women

In Europe the Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence – Istanbul Convention - is the most significant legal instrument for tackling violence against women. However the Convention was not negotiated in a vacuum but built upon what was already a growing body of normative standards in international human rights law. The lecture will therefore first outline the earlier developments in international law and in particular the reconceptualization that was needed to bring violence against women into the discourse of human rights. It will then outline the Convention and in particular its value added – why it is regarded as the gold standard in international measures - the most comprehensive international instrument to end violence against women and a flavour of some of the controversial points in its negotiations. Finally it will consider the UK’s position with respect to the Convention and some further developments in the international arena.

There will also be an end of lecture collection for Amnesty International .
