Ships and sea monsters: the maritime world and its superstitions

This module looks at various aspects of the maritime world and the superstitious beliefs that go with it.

We look at the different types of superstition found across the globe and over different periods of time. We will also consider representations of the maritime world and superstition in literature and other types of fiction. You will read selected articles or chapters which will then be discussed in class sessions. The module will discuss topics including ghost ships, sea monsters and island culture(s).
