Frequently asked questions

Who can access LinkedIn Learning?

All current University students and staff members have full access through their computing account. Unfortunately, alumni and retirees are not covered under this license and are therefore not eligible.

If you do not have access and feel you should, please contact us via ServiceLine.

Do I need to pay for access to LinkedIn Learning?

No. Access is free for all members of the University. To continue using LinkedIn Learning once you leave the University, you will need to take out your own personal subscription directly from LinkedIn.

When you sign into LinkedIn Learning, you may be presented with an option to join to your personal LinkedIn account. We recommend you do not join your accounts, as this may create login issues in the future.

I can't seem to log in even though I've entered my University ID and password

If you have chosen to link your personal LinkedIn account with the University's institutional LinkedIn Learning license, then you may encounter this issue when logging into a new machine. You will be presented with two separate log in pages, the first will be the organisational portal where you will enter your University ID and password in the usual way. This means LinkedIn Learning know you will be using the University license.

At the second login screen you will then need to enter your personal LinkedIn account details, so that the service recognises it's you as an individual. You should then be able to access LinkedIn Learning in the usual way. You will be presented with 2 log in screens each time you use a different browser or machine to access the service.

We currently do not recommend people join their LinkedIn accounts with the University's LinkedIn Learning license for this reason.

Can I access LinkedIn Learning away from the University?

Yes. You can use the service from any internet connected computer with an up to date browser. You can also use LinkedIn Learning on many mobile devices using the LinkedIn Learning app.

What happens to my collections and digital certificates when I leave the University?

You must download all of your data before leaving the institution. Unfortunately when your University account is deactivated, you will no longer be able to utilise the LearningIn Learning service.

If you would like to continue using LinkedIn Learning after you leave the institution, you can sign up for a consumer account by contacting the LinkedIn Learning suport team where your details may be migrated to a new account.

Does LinkedIn Learning offer training on subjects other than computer software?

Yes. The majority of their courses are on computer software, but they've got hundreds of courses on presentation skills, photography, music, CV building, productivity, project management and more.

I have incorporated LinkedIn Learning in my course. Can I have access to student data?

Yes. Get in touch with us through deskside@soton.ac.uk. We can work with you to identify what data would be helpful and appropriate and how best to help.
