Frequently asked questions

Who can access Lynda.com?

All current University students and staff members have full access to Lynda.com through their computing account. Unfortunately, alumni and retirees are not covered under this license and are therefore not eligible.

If you do not have access and feel you should, please contact us via ServiceLine.

Do I need to pay for access to Lynda.com?

No. Access to Lynda.com is free for all members of the University. To continue using Lynda.com once you leave the University, you will need to take out your own personal subscription directly from Lynda.com.

Can I access Lynda.com away from the University?

Yes. You can use Lynda.com from any internet connected computer with an up to date browser. You can also use Lynda.com on many mobile devices using the Lynda.com app.

What are the minimum machine requirements for using Lynda.com?

To watch videos on lynda.com you must be connected to the Internet. We recommend a 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi connection for optimal mobile viewing. You can also download courses to watch offline where Internet connection is not available.

Desktop requirements:

  • Safari 6 or later, Google Chrome 11 or later, Firefox 30 or later, Internet Explorer 9 or later
  • Mac OS 10.8 or later, Windows 7 SP1 or later
  • Broadband connection of 1 Mbps or greater

Recommended settings for mobile:

m.lynda.com (viewing lynda.com on mobile browsers)

  • Default Android browser or Mobile Safari
  • Android 2.3+ or iOS 7.0+

iOS app

  • Devices: iPad2+, iPhone 4GSM or iPod touch (5th generation)
  • iOS 7.0+

  • Devices: All tablets, laptops and desktops

What happens to my playlists and digital certificates when I leave the University?

You must download all of your data before leaving the institution. Unfortunately when your University account is deactivated, you will no longer be able to utilise the Lynda.com service.

If you would like to continue using Lynda.com after you leave the institution, you can sign up for a consumer account by contacting the Lynda.com customer services where your details may be migrated to a new account.

Does Lynda.com offer training on subjects other than computer software?

Yes. The majority of their courses are on computer software, but they've got hundreds of courses on presentation skills, photography, music, CV building, productivity, project management and more.

I have incorporated Lynda.com in my course. Can I have access to student data?

Yes. Get in touch with us through lynda@soton.ac.uk. We can work with you to identify what data would be helpful and appropriate and how best to help.

I'm still having problems, who can I contact for help?
