Hi, I'm Amy Wallace and I studied BSc Mathematics within Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I particularly liked the fact that you are given the opportunity to tailor your programme of study by choosing modules that are in line with your personal strengths and career goals.

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies in Maths at the University of Southampton?

I chose to study Maths because it is a subject that is highly regarded by employers and prepares you for a wide range of careers after graduation. Not only that, Southampton’s Maths department is ranked highly in the league tables and the courses offered are fantastic. I particularly liked the fact that you are given the opportunity to tailor your programme of study by choosing modules that are in line with your personal strengths and career goals. Alongside this, the teaching staff are incredibly talented and really do encourage you to fulfil your potential. The University of Southampton also offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities through SUSU, has a fantastic Careers department and is situated in a lovely city with plenty to do.

Q: What did you enjoy about studying Maths at Southampton?

Seeing myself develop academically was the highlight of studying at Southampton. During the first term I noticed the jump in the standard of A-Level to university maths but I quickly settled in and achieved higher grades as the course progressed. In addition, having regular coursework and midterm examinations ensured that I could constantly monitor my progress so that there were no surprises come exam times.

Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?

The University of Southampton exceeded my expectations in terms of what I thought I would have achieved by the end of University. I gained a first class honours degree and was successful in securing a place on a graduate internship after university. What’s more, I was also fortunate enough to be able to complete a 12 week summer internship through the university’s ‘Excel Southampton Scheme’ and was awarded the runner-up prize for the ‘Excel Southampton Business and Consumer Awareness Award 2012’. Through this I was offered a number of work opportunities during my studies and I continued to work for the University during my final year. I also joined the University’s gym and a local running club which inspired me to participate in a number of local races including the Great South Run!

Q: Any other comments?

Don’t let others put you off studying for a degree in mathematics. Before I came to university, I was told by my peers that the degree would be extremely challenging and that there was a chance I’d be out of my depth. However, although the degree was challenging, I was certainly not out of my depth and I found Southampton to be a place I could flourish. If you are willing to work hard and dedicate yourself to the programme then you will be successful.
