Hi, I'm Shirley Yam and I studied BSc Mathematics within Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Besides the knowledge taught in the modules, I learnt more how to communicate with different people by joining different societies which built my confidence which was a valuable skill to have.

Why did you choose to undertake your studies in Maths at the University of Southampton?

The strong reputation of University of Southampton was the most attractive thing to me. When I came for the Open Day I had a great first impression and all of the professors and students I met were very friendly. I immediately wanted to spend my next three years in this wonderful university.

What do you enjoy about studying Maths at Southampton?

In the first two years, all Math students generally studied similar modules which give us a solid foundation of Math knowledge and gave us ideas of what to specialise in. In third year, students study relevant modules which give you flexibility to prepare your future career. Besides that, University provides wide ranges of modules which may not be directly relevant to your specific degree, however this may widen the opportunities of our future career, for example, studying a language module.

What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?

Besides the knowledge taught in the modules, I learnt more how to communicate with different people by joining different societies which built my confidence which was a valuable skill to have.
