Hi, I'm Georgie Hart and I studied BSc, MSc and PhD within Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

The fact that employers came to Southampton University to specifically recruit from our course was absolutely fantastic. I am now employed with an airline which has a large Operational Research department.

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies and research with the University of Southampton?

When I left school, I wasn't sure what career I wanted to do but I knew that a strong mathematics degree from such a respected university would open many doors of opportunity for me upon graduation. I wasn't wrong! I had so many choices of career when I graduated that it was a matter of choosing one, as opposed to worrying or struggling! I also knew that there were a variety of modules to choose from which meant you could complement your maths degree with some other subjects such as Marketing, Consultancy Skills or even languages. This looks great on your CV and allows you to tailor your degree to what you enjoy/are good at.

Q: What did you enjoy about studying at Southampton?

The mathematics department was so supportive and friendly - which isn't what I expected from university. I expected to feel like "just another student", but you felt like you belonged to the department and lecturers were always available to help and advise you. The career advisory service at Southampton was also excellent, they gave you one-on-one time to help you discuss what the best career path might be and to work on your CV and applications together - it really was a massive support!

Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?

One of the great things about the maths department at Southampton, is the fantastic links with industry. My MSc summer project was with the World Health Organisation in Geneva which was fascinating and created great opportunities for me to network. This led to me collaborating with various health organisations for my PhD and travelling across the world attending and lecturing at conferences.

The fact that employers came to Southampton University to specifically recruit from our course was absolutely fantastic.

I worked for an airline which has a large Operational Research department for three years. I thoroughly enjoyed working for them; working in such a dynamic industry certainly means you never have the chance to be bored! The projects were diverse and challenging; you feel that you are making a difference; and sometimes you see the results of your projects being announced in the news, it is really rewarding!

I have now joined Atass Sports as a Sports Statistician.
