Charles  Adjei-Mensah BSc Mathematics with Actuarial Science

Hi, I'm Charles Adjei-Mensah and I studied BSc Mathematics with Actuarial Science within Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I really like the fact that we have such diversity in the students studying here. I've met so many wonderful people from all over the world and have made so many good friends.

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies with the University of Southampton?

I spent the year before university in England doing a foundation course at a sixth form college in Cambridge. I had heard very good things about both the city of Southampton from people who'd lived here and the quality of the actuarial science degree at the university. I also knew it offered a number of exemptions from the professional actuarial exams. However I was still a bit undecided until I visited. I immediately fell in love with the city and the university. The campus and city were so beautiful, lecturers and students were friendly and I just got that 'gut' feeling that I had to be here.

Q: What do you enjoy about studying at Southampton?

I really like the fact that we have such diversity in the students studying here. I've met so many wonderful people from all over the world and have made so many good friends. Also, I've been supported immensely since I got here. I came to Southampton having not done mathematics for a few months and was a bit behind in my knowledge. However, my personal tutor and various other tutors were very patient with me and helped me to catch up and actually excel in most of my modules. Furthermore, the clubs and societies here in Southampton are excellent because there are so many and whatever interests are, you will find something for you! I have really enjoyed being part of the society scene here.

Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?

I have developed a logical and analytical method of thinking as a result of studying here. We are taught not really to solve problems but have a mode of thinking which makes it possible to solve problems. Therefore, I am more equipped for the challenge of working in an actuarial environment. Also, I have become more confident in presentation skills. We have had to do presentations on a fairly regular basis since coming here and although I am naturally quite reserved, I have come to excel at presenting because of all the practice I've had. Moreover, through the Careers Service and the School of Mathemtics, I've been become more aware of my different skills I didn't know I possessed, for example teaching. The university provided the opportunity to teach and tutor secondary and A-level students and that I believe is a big achievement I can point to Southampton being a huge part of.

Q: Any other comments

Southampton really is a place that gets better the more you are here. Mathematics is tough here, but it is also highly enjoyable once you find your niche. It takes time but once you are settled, I believe there's no better place to be than here.
