Masa Vovk BSc Maths with Finance2014

Hi, I'm Masa Vovk and I studied BSc Maths with Finance within Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

There are very many careers fairs, and various societies such as Actuarial and IFS also make sure we get opportunities to meet potential employers and people who work in professions we are interested so we can network and get advice.

Q: Why did you choose to study at Southampton?

I wanted to experience studying in another country (originally I come from Slovenia), because I knew that way I would meet more people, become more independent and have better employability options.

Q: Are there lots of opportunities/places to socialise and relax here? (Clubs and societies)

There are very many societies and sports clubs, which are a great way to have fun and make friends … I make sure to try something new every year.

Q: What is your opinion about the University’s efforts to increase the flexibility of degree programmes and introduce more choice for personalised learning?

I think that it is great anyone can study what they are most interested in and what they believe will best suit the requirements of their future career.

Q: What is your opinion of support available for students on campus in terms of pastoral support, health services and student safety?

Everything is on campus – the health services centre as well as a safety bus which runs at night for students who don’t feel secure walking around Southampton. I believe there are also people who advise students if they have any problems and need someone to talk to or give advice, or they can just simply call the nightline.

Q: Does the University help its students get ready for employment?

Q: The University helps students find placements and internships to complement their studies, is this a good thing?

Of course it is! Nowadays it is very important to not only have a degree, but also werk-related experience, and internships are an excellent way of enhancing our CVs.

Q: What are the benefits of living in halls?

The halls take care of everything in terms of paying various utility bills, cleaning, students who live in halls also get a free Unilink bus pass, you are always surrounded by other students.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

After I graduate, I plan on continuing education – I will do a MSc programme in something finance related, and then who knows where life will take me – I would love to get a job that would allow me to travel the world!
