The A-team comes to Southampton
When A grade scoring Faizan Afzal starts his degree in Mathematics with Actuarial Science in the School of Mathematics at the University of Southampton this October, he'll be joining his brother Rameez who is already moving into his second year of the same degree.
Siblings studying on the same course are not uncommon, but between them, the brothers have stacked up 11 A-grades at A-level, plus a couple more A-grades at AS-level.
Faizan gained 6 A-grades in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Accounting and Urdu. Rameez scored 5 A-grades in Mathematics, Economics, Business Studies, Accounting and Urdu. These achievements qualified both for the School's prestigious Golden Jubilee Scholarships. This pays for all their undergraduate tuition fees.
Faizan will be one of over 180 students starting their mathematics degrees at Southampton in the coming academic year. Over 70 of these, both UK and international students, have also benefited from other forms of scholarships from the School of Mathematics. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, to a total value of over £120,000 this year alone.
Admissions tutor Dr Jim Renshaw commented, " Our portfolio of Mathematics degree programmes, student satisfaction scores, league table rankings and scholarships scheme means that Mathematics at Southampton is proving to be a very popular choice for students. For example, we currently offer the opportunity to obtain the maximum number of professional examination exemptions available anywhere in the UK via an undergraduate actuarial science programme. We have plans to extend this portfolio of exemptions further in the near future."
