Published: 11 March 2008

The School of Mathematics is celebrating a highly successful year in grant applications. In the past 11 months, members of the School have won over £5.7 million pounds in peer-reviewed or industrial sponsorship.

Each of the four research groups Applied, Pure, Statistics and Operational Research can boast of major grant success, covering areas as diverse as mathematical and statistical models for nano/bio-engineering, Bose-Einstein condensates, and analysis of geometric group theory and topology.

Major notable grants won include a £1.92 million STFC rolling grant in General Relativity, which confirms Southampton as a European centre of excellence in this area, and a £1.29 million EPSRC Science and Innovation Award for strategic investment and expansion of capacity in Operational Research.

Together with existing grants, this places the School of Mathematics well within the top 10 Schools of Mathematics in the UK by research income.
