Perins Maths Block Opens for Business

A beautiful warm, sunny morning provided the perfect setting this Wednesday (16 July) for the official opening ceremony of the new Perins School Maths block. A group of invited guests enjoyed an opportunity to network and tour the new building after the building was opened by Professor Graham Niblo, Head of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

In line with the other classroom blocks at Perins which are named after eminent academics, the new building has been called ‘Turing’, chosen by the students in memory of the British mathematician and World War II code-breaker Alan Turing. After a short speech identifying what an apt commemoration this was to Turing, Professor Niblo unveiled a wall plaque to mark the occasion. A copy of the speech can be found on the Perins School website www.perins.net .
In addition to Professor Niblo, guests at the opening ceremony, hosted by Perins Headteacher Mrs Janice Bernard included the Principal of Peter Symonds College in Winchester, Mr Stephen Carville, the Principal of Alton College, Mrs Jane Machell, and the headteachers of many of the local primary schools. This created a clear message on the importance of the teaching of mathematics through all the age groups and it relevance in ensuring the skills needed for the workforce of the future.
The two-storey building provides Perins with 8 new classrooms and includes a flexible layout design so some room sizes can be increased or decreased to meet the changing need of modern teaching practices. The new building, which was designed and built in partnership with construction company Bentley Projects, meets the latest environmental rating requirements for sustainable buildings and features energy efficient lighting, air-source heat pumps and the latest technology for insulation. The £1.2 million project was made possible with funding provided by the Academies Capital Maintenance Fund under the approval of the Education Funding Agency (EFA).
Headteacher Mrs Bernard commented “Over the last few years we have been investing heavily in the teaching of our core subjects. The opening of the new Maths block today sets us on our way to achieving our ambition to be one of the highest performing schools in the country. The school’s relationships with our education partners in Hampshire demonstrate our commitment to our students in enabling them to achieve at the highest levels too.”
In addition to the new classroom block, Perins School is engaged in a programme to refurbish its existing buildings and install new furniture. This summer also sees work commence on the English classroom block, Pascal, which will be re-clad and refurbished over the holiday period.
