In winning the 2018 OR Impact Award, I feel incredibly proud of my work.

Mathematical Sciences postgraduate student Jonny Cooper has been praised for his achievements during his summer project at Airbus analysing tests on aircraft landing gears. He has been studying a Masters degree in Operational Research (OR) in the School.

Jonny was runner-up for the OR Society’s prestigious May Hicks Award 2018 and was also awarded this year’s CORMSIS OR Impact prize.

CORMSIS is  the Centre for Operational Research, Management Sciences and Information Systems, a cross-disciplinary centre hosted jointly by the School of Mathematical Sciences and Southampton Business School.

The postgraduate employed the latest analytical techniques to process and understand the data he was working with at Airbus : “Using cutting edge analytical tools gives reliability, predictive ability and most importantly, safety, to large scale machinery in any industry,” he says. “As machine learning and artificial intelligence knowledge expands, the way in which companies operate will adapt, creating a more efficient and reliable technological society.”

His sponsor Dylan Reynolds adds: “During the three months Jonny was with us he achieved very impressive results. Understanding our industry, breaking down our needs, delivering the results to Airbus and delivering the dissertation for the academic community.”

The annual CORMSIS event celebrates the achievements of postgraduates who impressed their project sponsors and supervisors. During the last academic year, 162 students enrolled on six Masters degrees, a seventh will be introduced in the autumn (MSc in Data and Decision Analytics).

Julie Hickman and Peter Becque from CORMSIS administer the projects, liaising with the companies and organisations which offer challenging and rewarding student placements every year and making sure they connect with talented postgraduates eager to use the skills learned in the classroom in the world of work.

“These ‘real world’ projects are valued by our students and represent amazing value for money for companies in all sectors who would like an expert analyst to investigate a complex issue and suggest solutions. Anyone interested in finding out more should contact us” says Julie.
