Statistics and Operational Research climbs to 37th in the world

The QS World Rankings by Subject 2020 has been announced, placing Statistics and Operational Research at the University of Southampton at 37th in the world, climbing 11 places.

Commenting on the University’s global success in Statistics & Operational Research, Professor Marika Taylor, Head of Mathematical Sciences, said “This ranking is recognition of our high quality research and education in statistics and operational research, and our impactful work with government, business and industry. Both CORMSIS (Centre for OR, Management Sciences and Information Systems) and S3RI (Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute) are world class research centres.”

Professor Nikos Tzavidis, Head of Economic, Social and Political Sciences, added:

“This ranking provides evidence of the high quality research and education, at Undergraduate, Masters and PhD levels, in Statistics and Operational Research at the University of Southampton. Our academics make up one of the largest groups of statisticians in the UK working on research areas such as design of experiments, survey and official statistics methodology, statistical modelling, biostatistics and policy and evaluation. Our research is interdisciplinary and impacts government, business and industry. Both S3RI (Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute) and CORMSIS (Centre for OR, Management Sciences and Information Systems) are world class centres at the centre of our research activity working alongside the Schools of Economic Social and Political Sciences (Department of Social Statistics and Demography), Mathematics and the Business School.”

Dr Christine Currie, Associate Professor of Operational Research and Director of CORMSIS also commented:

“CORMSIS is an internationally-leading centre in Operational Research and it’s great to see this being recognised by QS. We bring together over 50 academics in operational research from Mathematical Sciences and Southampton Business School to carry out world-class research and teaching, working closely with industry and public services.”
