I will talk about a recent note of mine, written with N. Nikolov, wherein we describe elementary examples of finitely presented sofic groups which are not residually amenable (and thus not initially subamenable). The existence of such groups was a conjecture of Gromov's and these are the second known class of examples. I will also introduce an open question, which asks if a free product of two amenable groups over a finite subgroup is residually amenable and answer this positively for the class of locally finite groups.
