Event details
When studying matter at very small scales, its constituents — electrons in a metal or atoms in a gas — are described by quantum mechanics, i.e., they can behave both as a wave and a particle. I shall discuss these new effects caused by quantum mechanics and how they show up in experiments. Of particular interest are mesoscopic systems, which show a delicate interplay of quantum mechanics and finite system size. I will describe how simple calculations and simple models go a long way to elucidate the underlying physics of these systems.
