Event details

Abstract: Symmetries are ubiquitous in modern physics. They determine the structure of theories, they predict the existence of particles, they are used as guidance for new theories etc. First I will give a brief overview of applications of group theory, ranging from particle physics to condensed matter physics. Then I will explain one or two concepts in more detail, such as "spontaneous symmetry breaking", which is the underlying concept for a multitude of different phenomena, for instance ferromagnetism and the Higgs mechanism in particle physics. No background in theoretical physics is required to follow the talk.
